Doing Varroa Mite counts with alcohol wash post treatment check after using MAQS.
Five different yards, three Apiary's had mite counts of 5 to 19 mites per 300 bees before
Treatment post mite count 30 days after treatment where very low 2 to 3 mites per 300 bees.
But things changed for two Apairy's as before treatment they both had colonies with K-Wing
And mites visible on many bees some with two and three mites on each bee no DWV was found.
Treated with MAQS after 30 days post mite count Failed 19 mites per 300 bees and other with
18 mites per 300 bees , notes no visual mites on bees still a few bees with K-Wing.
Why did the first three do great and yet the heavy infested colonies fail.
All hives where very strong with bees and hive set up the same a medium super and two
Deeps .
To me even with the very high mite load the treatment should have done the same job and
For the most part killed off the mites to a very low level as this treatment,is claimed to kill
Off mites in the brood cells .
Colonies have been given a second treatment this weekend as this is what the Beekeepers wanted
To do to get the mite load under control .
With the weather and time of year I'm not sure I want to open the colonie again for a mite count
As it would be last week of Oct.
So at this point I would like to hear your thoughts and suggestions you may have.
Just for information the three colonies with low counts are local Nucs this is their second year
The two with high mite loads are package bees this is there second year. They all made some
Extra honey last year and a good crop this year.
I want to see these bees alive come spring, we will do a mid May mite count or earlier if weather
Permits.
Thank
Ron
