Why not help fund getting an exhibit/display/observation hive going at the Fairbanks Museum? Seems like the perfect use of surplus cash, and fits all the criteria. I can't imagine it would be terribly expensive. Vermont's rich beekeeping history (thinking of the book being worked on here) could also be included as part of the exhibit. If there is any interest in this I would be more than happy to help facilitate. Something like the attached photo would be really cool!

Maybe you could find a local business to donate 1/2 the funds and with a proposal go to the VBA looking for the other 1/2.

It is my understanding that there is an exemption on removeable frames for educational purposes.
UPDATE: I bumped into Adam Kane, the Director of Fairbanks. They are indeed interested, and have an insect exhibit planned. He mentioned that he had already reached out to Bill Mares in regards to setting something up (not $$ related, for technical advice), but hasn't heard back. He is also contacting David Trembly about fixed combs. They are still rolling around where to put it (taxidermied and living creatures aren't supposed to displayed together?). They want to keep the observation hive outside, possibly under a gazebo. I didn't have a whole lot of time to talk about why that wasn't a good idea, but did promise to open some lines of communication. Somebody please get in touch with him? I have offered my time to tend the hive should it need attention. It would be great to have perhaps a beekeping history display that would serve as a taste test for this new book? They are hoping to have something set up for spring.

That looks really cool? Do you have details as to how it was constructed? Is it a truly permanent installation? I ask because the white board between the combs looks very clean (not to mention the glass) so it looks like something that had been recently assembled and I would like to know how it is managed over the long haul.

yes after reading a bit deeper you can get a variance to the law from David our state inspector to have a non removable frame hive as a special project.

When is the next meeting? They would like to get this going by spring, and I want to be sure that this becomes an agenda item. There is also the opportunity for space exhibiting the history of beekeeping in VT in conjunction with this. . If someone could PM me the contact info for those involved in writing the forthcoming book that was discussed at the meeting last week, that would be great.
Might want to have a look at the one down at the Montshire Museum of Science in Norwich, VT. It is very nice and very popular.
Michael, Have you approached the North Country Beekeepers Association about setting up a observation hive at Fairbanks Museum? I see they are offering beekeeping class at the Fairbanks Museum and are charging a fee to attend their one day session on March 11.
