Hi all!
My husband and I are new to beekeeping
we brought our nucs home on Saturday and let them settle a little. The next day was warm and sunny, so my husband took the opportunity to transfer them into their hives. All seemed well, but that evening he said he saw my queen just outside the entrance of the hive. He was able to get her back in and we blocked off most of the entrance overnight. I couldn't find much research on why this may have happened or what it means, any ideas? The day we took them home was the snowy May day, so I wasn't sure if maybe there was some hive stress from being cold and not having a chance to gather more food, but we did put plenty of food in the new hive for them. All seemed well this morning, and when I do my first inspection I'll see how she's doing Thanks!

Yes, there were plenty of capped cells, and plenty of larva. The queen looked healthy, and the brood frames looked great.
She definitely seemed to be working in full effect. I did find what appeared to maybe be a queen cell, but opened it up and didn't see anything inside.

No offense taken, I was actually thinking the same thing, and so was another local beekeeper we talked to. We did our first hive inspection yesterday and found the queens in both hives, and my husband confirmed it was not the queen he saw taking a stroll outside, haha! I was glad to find her happy and healthy and doing her thing. Thank you for your response!

Hi, Welcome to the wonderful world of beekeeping. You mentioned that you are new beekeepers. First of all, was the queen marked ? If not, a drone can easily be mistaken for a queen. I cannot imagine a queen being out of the hive unless she was not properly mated and was going out for a mating flight. (And a mating flight would not usually be in the late evening) Although strange things sometimes happen....
Also, queens are usually accompanied by an entourage of attendants....
